Mekhi Griffin
Who are you?
My name is Mekhi Griffin, usually everyone just calls me Khi (partly the inspiration for my artist’s name). Born & raised in Detroit, MI, I designed my stage name to only represent me. Its only one of everyone out here in the world & I want everything I do to not be compared to what everyone else is doing. When people say my name, I want them to say it in a way where it feels like I’m the only star on Earth, like an anomaly almost.
How did you start?
I started really making music around the age of 9 when I had gotten my first xylophone set. I knew I always had a thing for music whenever I’d be with my dad’s side of the family & I would see how every member had a groove to them. The family was always very music oriented so I felt it flowed naturally for me growing up. After a few years in band, I started recording music at the end junior year of high school. I would post bandlab snippets to my story at the time with me rapping on meme’d out type beats. Overtime, I started taking it more seriously & I started seeing how people actually will mess with this type of music & that made me continue. Im still continuing to grow as an artist with many more things to learn overtime but so far, the feeling of making a song you love is unmatched.
Your Style/Vibe?
I’d say my music is meant for the OPIUM/Rockstar genre of people. With my main inspirations coming from Ken Carson & Playboi Carti, I tend to shift the sound of my music closer towards their aesthetic. The overhyped adlibs, occasional screaming, & melodic flows on a rage beat is like a form of overstimulation that brings everything together for me. I love the chaotic elements of my songs where other people would most likely tune to the next artists & I think that’s what makes me stand out. If the vibe is for you then its for you but if its not then im not mad, most people aren’t tuned to this type of music yet.
Your End Goal?
My end goal with music is to inspire others to be creative no matter what. Who cares about what this person/group thinks? Who cares that you’re using wired headphones to record? It’s okay, everyone starts somewhere. Most people usually don’t have the confidence to post certain quotes on their social media stories due to how people would perceive them. If you enjoy what you do, there’s no reason to stop. The only person you must impress is YOU & with music, everyone is going to have their opinions. If YOU know what YOU like, then the outside stuff doesn’t matter at all.
